Growing Milpa on the Levi’s Nek farm – Lesotho

After planting maize on one of their plots, the young people at Levi’s Nek farm are now sowing climbing bean seeds at the foot of the maize plants that have already grown. They use the Milpa technique, which involves combining complementary plants. In this way, the beans use the maize as a support for climbing, while enriching the soil with nitrogen for the maize. This is why the youngsters waited a few weeks before adding the bean seeds, so that the maize was already well established.
