Winter cabbages take their place in Roosboom Halfway House’s garden

In the garden at Roosboom Halfway House, the women have this year grown several hundred young cabbage plants themselves, a crop particularly well suited to the southern african winter.

Sown in the garden nursery, the seedlings are now ready to be transplanted into the greenhouse as well as into additional outdoor growing beds. This new stage marks the beginning of an essential season for the center’s food self-sufficiency.

Throughout the winter months, these cabbages will help enrich the daily meals prepared for the children welcomed at Roosboom Halfway House, providing fresh vegetables for the sauces served alongside meals every day.
