New cultivation area covered

At St. Paul’s School in Leribe, Lesotho, deaf and hard of hearing youth have begun building a covered area to protect crops from the scorching summer sun. A net with reduced opacity (40%) reduces evaporation and protects the crops.

A comparative experiment on two similar crop beds will be conducted, one under cover and the other in the open air. Crop growth and the yield of the beds will be observed over one season.

If this process proves to be effective, it can be used in other gardens, until trees can replace this process to provide natural shade while fertilizing the soil.

Here is the area of cultivation covered by the young people. It was built in 3 weeks and will soon be able to welcome leafy vegetables.
