New crops in Dawady’s shared garden

In Dawady’s shared garden, located next to the health centre, nearly 150 women from the village work together to cultivate different plots throughout the year. After several months of production and a recent harvest of various vegetables, the gardeners have prepared the beds for a new crop by planting bissap, a plant highly prized in Senegal for its leaves and calyxes, which are used in food and drink preparation. This crop diversifies the garden’s production and makes the most of the plots between two vegetable growing cycles. As with the garden’s other activities, the women benefit from the support of Abdourahmane and Malik, the two gardeners based in Dawady, who monitor the crops and share their knowledge with the collective.

The shared garden, set up by The Ivory foundation in 2018, thus continues to play an important role in food security and solidarity within this isolated community in eastern Senegal.
