Sowing in holes in the Popenguine greenhouse, Senegal

In the greenhouse of the Popenguine women’s collective’s market gardening area, cucumbers were sown directly in the greenhouse on growing beds using the hole technique.

The pockets are staggered, about 50 cm apart. This method involves loosening the soil in an area about 20 cm in diameter and depth, then incorporating compost or fertiliser. The seed thus benefits from rich, loose soil to start its growth and develop its roots deeply.

This technique also saves compost and organic matter by concentrating them directly at the base of the future plant.

As a precaution, additional seedlings were also planted in pots in the nursery. This will allow the results of the two methods to be compared in the coming weeks.
