Mulching and crop enrichment in the Garden of Skills, Eswatini

The women use natural fertilizers such as compost, manure and biochar produced locally with the support of The Ivory Foundation to enrich the crop beds in the Garden of Skills.

Grass, previously cut on the ground and then dried, is also added to cover the crop beds. This is the mulching technique used in permaculture to limit evaporation and drying of the soil, thus saving water. Moreover, it is winter in Eswatini and this vegetation cover protects the young shoots from the cold nights.
