Harvesting Cucumber Seeds

Producing your own seeds is a key step towards greater self-sufficiency in the garden.
Accessible to everyone, this practice not only helps reduce costs but also preserves varieties that are well adapted to local growing conditions.

In this video, we guide you step by step through the process of harvesting and preparing cucumber seeds.

The first step is to carefully select your fruits: it is essential to allow the cucumbers chosen for seed production to reach full maturity.Their colour changes from green to yellow, indicating that the seedsinside are ready to be harvested.

Once the fruit has been picked, simply cut it lengthwise and extract the seeds along with the pulp. This mixture is then placed in a jar filled with water to trigger natural fermentation. Over approximately 48 hours, this process removes the coating — a thin gelatinous layer surrounding the seeds that can inhibit germination.

After this stage, the seeds are thoroughly rinsed and then left to dry for around 48 hours in a dry, well-ventilated place. For small quantities, a simple coffee filter suspended in an airy spot works perfectly as a drying support.

A very simple test can be used to check whether the seeds are ready for storage: when a seed snaps cleanly under pressure, it is sufficiently dry.

The seeds can then be stored under suitable conditions and used in future growing seasons.
