Planting of fertilizer trees – Bala, Senegal

posted in: Bala Garden

“A fertilizer tree is a tree whose activity enriches the topsoil of a land, improves its texture and favors its structuring” – Dupriez-de- Leener, 1993.

There are several methods for planting fertilizer trees around the perimeter of a market garden.

They can be planted close together (2.5 meters apart) and then when they grow, every other tree can be cut down to produce wood for the villagers. Indeed, when the tree is young, its root network and its fertilization radius are smaller. Then, it is important to maintain and prune the trees regularly to avoid shading. These prunings will also constitute an important biomass ratio for the garden.
