Boulel is one of four villages supported by The Ivory Foundation in setting up market gardens around Dawady.
The vegetable garden, established in 2025, now enables many women in the village to be involved in vegetable production. In this remote area of Eastern Senegal, the garden plays an important role in providing fresh vegetables during the dry season, thereby helping to improve the diet of the inhabitants.
In Boulel, the gardeners have also developed an ingenious solution: some plots are protected by mosquito nets installed above the crops. This technique protects young shoots from attack, particularly from birds, which are fond of young shoots. It also has another important advantage: it reduces water evaporation and the impact of the sun, particularly during the dry season.
