Workshop on the installation of the insect hotel with the children of the CLAJE in the garden of Traversine-Villiot, Paris

With the children welcomed by the Centre Paris Anim’ (CLAJE), the team of Dessine l’Espoir finalised the installation of the insect hotel in the garden of Traversine-Villiot.

We installed pieces of broken bricks for the staphylinid, pine cones for the ladybirds, dead wood with holes in it for the megachiles (a family of solitary bees), hollow bricks for the bees, a box filled with straw with a few openings for lacewings and a flight board for bumblebees, branches for hoverflies, an upturned clay pot filled with straw for earwigs and pieces of bark for sowbugs.

All these insects will play a vital role in the health of our vegetable garden: either as pollinators, such as bees, which gather flowers and are essential for the reproduction of many plants and, more generally, for the preservation of plant species or as auxiliaries, such as ladybirds, which eat insects classified as pests.

Once the insect hotel was finished, the children coloured in the insect cards we had prepared so that they could better remember the insects that are beneficial to a vegetable garden.
