The educational vegetable garden at the Petits Princes school in Rufisque, Senegal.

On the roof of the Petits Princes inclusive school in Rufisque, Senegal, the bougainvillea planted in the centre of the terrace is adorned with bright colours and provides welcome shade for the educational vegetable garden set up by Designing Hope four years ago.

Crops thrive in recycled containers converted into planters: aubergines, okra, lemongrass, mint, peppers… all varieties that will be used in the kitchen.

This garden is not only a place of production: it is also an educational and participatory space. The school children take part in its maintenance alongside Joseph, the garden manager, and the teachers, learning how to sow, water, weed and harvest.
