Harvesting onion seeds at La Traversine Bercy

At the end of summer, harvesting seeds is a special time in an educational garden. It perfectly illustrates the life cycle of vegetables, ‘from seed to seed’.

Children are always amazed to discover the journey taken by the plant: from the small seed sown the previous season, a bulb was born, which was left to form a stem, then a flower, which turned into a beautiful straw-coloured ball. Inside, hundreds of small black seeds are hidden, ready to give birth to new onions.

This concrete observation arouses both curiosity and wonder: understanding that a single seed can produce hundreds more is an illustration of nature’s generosity….
