At Roosboom Halfway House, the vegetable garden is much more than just a place to grow produce.
It is a real learning and sharing environment for the 60 children from the township, who are welcomed every day and enjoy a hot meal prepared with vegetables they have helped to grow themselves.
Every week, they actively participate in maintaining the garden alongside the women from the centre and the gardener.
Watering, sowing, transplanting, weeding and harvesting: the children are gradually becoming familiar with gardening tasks. These activities give them an opportunity to understand the plant cycle and the importance of working together.
Their involvement also reinforces the direct link between their efforts in the garden and the meal they are served every day.
