For 15 years, the Designing Hope association has been welcoming around 60 orphaned children from the township to Roosboom Halfway House every afternoon to share a hot meal after school.
In the centre’s small kitchen, Lulu and Fisani prepare simple, balanced meals every day: pap – the typical southern African cornmeal porridge – or rice, accompanied by generous helpings of sauce made with fresh vegetables from the garden.
The expansion of the garden, made possible thanks to the support of The Ivory Foundation and the Bel Foundation, has increased and diversified vegetable production. This development is directly reflected in the children’s meals, which are now more varied, more nutritious and always prepared with care.
