Every day, the Roosboom Halfway House welcomes around 60 disadvantaged children from the township, offering them a warm and comforting meal after school. In the centre’s small kitchen, Lulu and Fisani carefully prepare balanced meals based on pap — the traditional Southern African cornmeal porridge — or rice, accompanied by sauces made with fresh vegetables from the garden.
Thanks to the expansion of the garden, supported by The Ivory Foundation and the Bel Foundation, local vegetable production has tripled, enriching the meals served and improving the children’s vitamin and mineral intake.
